The Netherlands has long held the title of the cultural centre of the European cannabis industry. Since 1976, with the revision of the Opium Act, the Netherlands championed the decriminalisation of small amounts of cannabis, giving rise to the iconic coffee shops. However, a key challenge persisted: while cannabis was sold legally, its supply chain remained in the shadows. 


In 2017, the Dutch Government committed to exploring regulated cultivation and sale of cannabis to provide a quality-controlled supply to coffee shops and understand its societal impacts. After extensive preparation, legislation supporting this initiative was passed and implemented on 1 July 2020. As of late 2023, there's growing anticipation for the start of the Preliminary Phase of the Cannabis Experiment in Breda and Tilburg, set to begin on December 15th.
